Exodus 12:1–14 (ESV)

¹The Lord said to Moses and Aaron in the land of Egypt, ²“This month shall be for you the beginning of months. It shall be the first month of the year for you. ³Tell all the congregation of Israel that on the tenth day of this month every man shall take a lamb according to their fathers’ houses, a lamb for a household. ⁴And if the household is too small for a lamb, then he and his nearest neighbor shall take according to the number of persons; according to what each can eat you shall make your count for the lamb. ⁵Your lamb shall be without blemish, a male a year old. You may take it from the sheep or from the goats, ⁶and you shall keep it until the fourteenth day of this month, when the whole assembly of the congregation of Israel shall kill their lambs at twilight.

⁷“Then they shall take some of the blood and put it on the two doorposts and the lintel of the houses in which they eat it. ⁸They shall eat the flesh that night, roasted on the fire; with unleavened bread and bitter herbs they shall eat it. ⁹Do not eat any of it raw or boiled in water, but roasted, its head with its legs and its inner parts. ¹⁰And you shall let none of it remain until the morning; anything that remains until the morning you shall burn. ¹¹In this manner you shall eat it: with your belt fastened, your sandals on your feet, and your staff in your hand. And you shall eat it in haste. It is the Lord‘s Passover. ¹²For I will pass through the land of Egypt that night, and I will strike all the firstborn in the land of Egypt, both man and beast; and on all the gods of Egypt I will execute judgments: I am the Lord. ¹³The blood shall be a sign for you, on the houses where you are. And when I see the blood, I will pass over you, and no plague will befall you to destroy you, when I strike the land of Egypt.

God Gave Us a Way to Remember That He Saves Us

INTRODUCTION

A. Over the last two Sundays, we’ve been watching God’s rescue story unfold in Exodus.

B. Two Sundays ago … we saw that even when God seemed absent, he was already at work. While Israel suffered under slavery and oppression, God was preserving life and preparing a deliverer through acts of courage and faithfulness.

C. Last Sunday … we met Moses at the burning bush and discovered that the God who seemed silent had not forgotten his people. God saw their suffering, heard their cries, and came down to rescue them.

Together, these passages remind us that even when we cannot see him, God is at work to rescue us. God comes down … and invites participation.

D. Today … we come to the last few days before the actual exodus begins … and we’ll see that God gave us a way to remember that He saves.

Exodus 12:1–14 (ESV)

Here, God is giving instructions for keeping the Passover.

What is God doing?

He is instituting a ceremony that is going to become a memorial. But of what?

The Passover was to be a memorial …

1. of HOW THEY WERE SAVED, obviously …

Exodus 12:7 … ⁷“Then they shall take some of the blood and put it on the two doorposts and the lintel of the houses in which they eat it.
Exodus 12:13-14 … ¹³The blood shall be a sign for you, on the houses where you are. And when I see the blood, I will pass over you, and no plague will befall you to destroy you, when I strike the land of Egypt. ¹⁴“This day shall be for you a memorial day, and you shall keep it as a feast to the Lord; throughout your generations, as a statute forever, you shall keep it as a feast.

2. of HOW MUCH THEIR SALVATION COST … Consider …

Exodus 12:3 … ³Tell all the congregation of Israel that on the tenth day of this month every man shall take a lamb according to their fathers’ houses, a lamb for a household.
Exodus 12:6 … ⁶and you shall keep it until the fourteenth day of this month, when the whole assembly of the congregation of Israel shall kill their lambs at twilight.
- - WHAT DO YOU THINK HAPPENED IN THOSE 4 DAYS … especially with kids?
  - Lambs, like kids … are very cute and lovable.
  - So you can only imagine how those children must have felt when the lambs were killed … like losing a pet.

So, Israelites would have known that the Passover Meal and ceremony was to be a memorial.

What they would NOT have known is that the whole experience (with the lamb without blemish … the killing of the lamb … the blood on the doorposts …) was foreshadowing (pointing to) Jesus Christ as the Saviour of all mankind.

John 1:29 The next day John saw Jesus coming toward him, and said, Behold! The Lamb of God who takes away the sin of the world! …
John 10:9 I am the door. If anyone enters by Me, he will be saved, and will go in and out and find pasture.
John 6:53-56 Then Jesus said to them, “Most assuredly, I say to you, unless you eat the flesh of the Son of Man and drink His blood, you have no life in you. ⁵⁴Whoever eats My flesh and drinks My blood has eternal life, and I will raise him up at the last day. ⁵⁵For My flesh is food indeed, and My blood is drink indeed. ⁵⁶He who eats My flesh and drinks My blood abides in Me, and I in him”. …
Luke 22:19-20 And He took bread, gave thanks and broke it, and gave it to them, saying, “This is My body which is given for you; do this in remembrance of Me.” ²⁰Likewise He also took the cup after supper, saying, “This cup is the new covenant in My blood, which is shed for you.”
In his letter to the Corinthians, Paul tells them about what he calls the Lord’s Supper …
- - 1 Corinthians 11:23 For I received from the Lord that which I also delivered to you: that the Lord Jesus on the same night in which He was betrayed took bread; ²⁴and when He had given thanks, He broke it and said, “Take, eat; this is My body which is broken for you; do this in remembrance of Me.” ²⁵In the same manner He also took the cup after supper, saying, “This cup is the new covenant in My blood. This do, as often as you drink it, in remembrance of Me.”

What’s the PURPOSE of the Lord’s Supper?

1 Corinthians 11:26 For as often as you eat this bread and drink this cup, you proclaim the Lord’s death till He comes.
It’s to proclaim the Lord’s death … as a memorial.

CONCLUSION

A. As members of the Church, we meet often to celebrate the Lord’s Supper.

B. Again and again, we come to the table in remembrance of Jesus.

We remember that God saves.
We remember that Jesus is our Passover Lamb.
We remember that death does not have the final word.
We remember that we belong to the Father through the Son in the power of the Holy Spirit.
And we remember that the God who rescued the Israelites from Egypt is still rescuing us now.

C. Without a ceremony like the Lord’s Supper, we could forget HOW we were saved … and WHAT IT COST TO SAVE US (The Father’s Son … and the Son’s life).

D. So … THANKS be to God who gave us a way to remember that He saves us.
