Discipleship 101

LESSON 5

JESUS CHRIST – Who He Was

Who was JESUS of Nazareth?

How was JESUS different from other humans?

    • He had a divine nature, even while He had a human nature.
    • NOTE: He was NOT half-God & half-man.
    • He was fully God, even while He was fully human.

What does the Bible tell us about Jesus birth?

    • He had a human mother, but no human father.
    • His father was God.

Why was Jesus called “Immanuel”?

    • Matthew 1:23  “Behold, the virgin shall be with child, and bear a Son, and they shall call His name Immanuel,” which is translated, “God with us.”
    • “Immanuel” means “God with us”.
    • Jesus was God with us – God incarnate.

What does the “incarnation” mean?

    • “incarnate” means  having a physical or bodily form, especially human.
    • “incarnation” means  taking on a human or animal shape.
    • In religion, “incarnation” is usually used to refer to a god or spirit taking on a human or animal form or shape

What does the Bible tell us about the Word?

    • John 1:1-2   In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God.  2 He was in the beginning with God.
    • John 1:14   And the Word became flesh and dwelt among us, and we beheld His glory, the glory as of the only begotten of the Father, full of grace and truth.
    • The Word was God … and the Word became flesh.
    • In other words, God (The Word) became a human.

According to the Bible, what did the Word do?

    • The Word became flesh (a human)

Whom did the Word come to earth as?

    • John 1:10-11  He was in the world, and the world was made through Him, and the world did not know Him.  11 He came to His own, and His own did not receive Him.
      • John 1:14   And the Word became flesh and dwelt among us, and we beheld His glory, the glory as of the only begotten of the Father, full of grace and truth.
      • John 1:15-18  John bore witness of Him and cried out, saying, “This was He of whom I said, ‘He who comes after me is preferred before me, for He was before me.’ ”
16 And of His fullness we have all received, and grace for grace. 17 For the law was given through Moses, but grace and truth came through Jesus Christ. 18 No one has seen God at any time. The only begotten Son, who is in the bosom of the Father, He has declared Him.Yeshua … a.k.a Jesus of Nazareth … Jesus Christ … Jesus, the Christ.
      • Philippians 2:5-11   5 Let this mind be in you which was also in Christ Jesus, 6 who, being in the form of God, did not consider it robbery to be equal with God, 7 but made Himself of no reputation, taking the form of a bondservant, and coming in the likeness of men. 8 And being found in appearance as a man, He humbled Himself and became obedient to the point of death, even the death of the cross. 9 Therefore God also has highly exalted Him and given Him the name which is above every name, 10 that at the name of Jesus every knee should bow, of those in heaven, and of those on earth, and of those under the earth, 11 and that every tongue should confess that Jesus Christ is Lord, to the glory of God the Father.
