SHARING THE GOSPEL

… Part 2 of the GCI motto, “Living and Sharing The Gospel”.

Why study “non-essential” or  “disputable” Bible passages?

  1. They are in the Bible … They must be there for a good reason.
  2. To be better equipped, personally … so that we can be more effective instruments in God’s hands … By studying together, we have opportunity to sharpen each other … as iron sharpens iron.
  3. To be more firm … “If we don’t know where we stand with God, it’s harder to take a stand for God.” ~ TomMurray
  4. As leaders (shepherds), we have a responsibility … and an obligation … to feed the flock. (Acts 20:28)
  5. Others are studying said passages … We should be ready to answer them (1 Peter 3:15) … and the best way to be ready is to prepare, by studying (2 Timothy 2:15).

AGENDA …

  1. Why bother discussing the Gospel?
  2. Which Gospel should GCJ share?
  3. What does GCI believe the Gospel Is?
  4. Coming to grips with what GCI believes about the Gospel

1.  Why Bother Discussing The Gospel?

Matthew 28:19-20   Go ye therefore, and teach all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Ghost:  20 Teaching them to observe all things whatsoever I have commanded you: and, lo, I am with you always, even unto the end of the world.  Amen.

Matthew 24:14   And this gospel of the kingdom shall be preached in all the world for a witness unto all nations; and then shall the end come.

  • The Gospel is part of the Great Commission … It’s a part of why we are here as a church.
  • It’s what persons must believe … if they are to become disciples.
  • It’s what we must preach, proclaim, share ….

2.  Which Gospel Should GCJ Preach and Share?

There is only one Gospel … but there are many versions.

If we are Grace Communion Jamaica … then we should know (or, at the very least, be interested in) what Grace Communion International believes the Gospel is.

As we consider what GCI believes about the Gospel, we should be mindful that beliefs are shaped by theology … so I believe it is only natural that … at some point … we should be interested in the theology of GCI, since that is what would have shaped GCI beliefs … NOT because it will affect our salvation much, BUT because will affect how we live.  To this end, we share the following article by Joseph Tkach Jr., former president to GCI …

3.  What does GCI believe the Gospel is?

GCI: The GCI Statement of Beliefs

Christians are exhorted to “grow in the grace and knowledge of our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ” (2 Peter 3:18). The Spirit of God leads the church into all truth (John 16:13). Accordingly, the following statement of beliefs is not a closed creed. GCI constantly renews its commitment to truth and deeper understanding and seeks to respond to God’s guidance in its beliefs and practices.

Summary of Our Christian Faith

  • There is one God — Father, Son, and Holy Spirit.
  • God the Father made all things through the Son, sent the Son for our salvation, and gives us the Holy Spirit.
  • The Son of God, Jesus Christ, our Lord and Savior, was born of the virgin Mary, fully God and fully human, and is the perfect revelation of the Father and the perfect representative of humanity. He suffered and died on the cross for all human sin, was raised bodily on the third day, and ascended to heaven. Standing in for all humanity before the Father, Jesus Christ provides the perfect human response to God.  Since he died for all, all died in him … and all will be made alive in him.
  • The Holy Spirit brings sinners to repentance and faith, assures believers of their forgiveness and acceptance as God’s dearly loved children, and works in them to conform them to the image of Jesus Christ.
  • The Bible is the inspired and infallible Word of God that testifies to Jesus Christ. The Bible is fully authoritative for all matters of faith and salvation.
  • Salvation comes only by God’s grace and not by works, and it is experienced through faith in Jesus Christ. Christians respond to the joy of salvation when they gather in regular fellowship and live godly lives in Jesus Christ.
  • We look forward to the resurrection of the dead and the life of the age to come.

4.  Coming to Grips with what GCI believes about the Gospel

The Gospel

The gospel is the good news of the kingdom of God and salvation by God’s grace through faith in Jesus Christ.  It is the message that Christ died for our sins and has made us his own before and apart from our believing in him and has bound us to himself by his love in such a way that he will never let us go.  Therefore, he calls on all humans to repent and believe in him as Lord and Savior.

  • 1 Corinthians 15:1-5    Moreover, brethren, I declare unto you the gospel which I preached unto you, which also ye have received, and wherein ye stand;  By which also ye are saved, if ye keep in memory what I preached unto you, unless ye have believed in vain.  For I delivered unto you first of all that which I also received, how that Christ died for our sins according to the scriptures;  And that he was buried, and that he rose again the third day according to the scriptures:  And that he was seen of Cephas, then of the twelve:
  • Colossians 2:13    And you, being dead in your sins and the uncircumcision of your flesh, hath he quickened together with him, having forgiven you all trespasses;
  • 1 John 2:2   And he is the propitiation for our sins: and not for ours only, but also for the sins of the whole world.
  • Romans 5:8   But God commendeth his love toward us, in that, while we were yet sinners, Christ died for us.
  • Romans 5:18-21   Therefore as by the offence of one judgment came upon all men to condemnation; even so by the righteousness of one the free gift came upon all men unto justification of life19 For as by one man’s disobedience many were made sinners, so by the obedience of one shall many be made righteous20 Moreover the law entered, that the offence might abound. But where sin abounded, grace did much more abound21 That as sin hath reigned unto death, even so might grace reign through righteousness unto eternal life by Jesus Christ our Lord.
  • John 3:16-17   For God so loved the world, that he gave his only begotten Son, that whosoever believeth in him should not perish, but have everlasting life.  17 For God sent not his Son into the world to condemn the world; but that the world through him might be saved.
  • John 5:24  Verily, verily, I say unto you, He that heareth my word, and believeth on him that sent me, hath everlasting life, and shall not come into condemnation; but is passed from death unto life.
  • Luke 24:46-48   And said unto them, Thus it is written, and thus it behooved Christ to suffer, and to rise from the dead the third day:  47 And that repentance and remission of sins should be preached in his name among all nations, beginning at Jerusalem.  48 And ye are witnesses of these things.
  • Colossians 1:19-23   For it pleased the Father that in him should all fulness dwell; 20 And, having made peace through the blood of his cross, by him to reconcile all things unto himself; by him, I say, whether they be things in earth, or things in heaven.  21 And you, that were sometime alienated and enemies in your mind by wicked works, yet now hath he reconciled   22 In the body of his flesh through death, to present you holy and unblameable and unreproveable in his sight:  23 If ye continue in the faith grounded and settled, and be not moved away from the hope of the gospel, which ye have heard, and which was preached to every creature which is under heaven; whereof I Paul am made a minister;
  • Acts 8:12     But when they believed Philip preaching the things concerning the kingdom of God, and the name of Jesus Christ, they were baptized, both men and women.
  • Matthew 28:19-20    Go ye therefore, and teach all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Ghost:  20 Teaching them to observe all things whatsoever I have commanded you: and, lo, I am with you always, even unto the end of the world. Amen.

The Kingdom of God

The kingdom of God in the broadest sense is God’s supreme sovereignty. God’s reign is now manifest in the Church  and in the life of each believer who is submissive to his will.  The kingdom of God will be fully manifest over the whole world after the return of Jesus Christ when he delivers all things to the Father.

(Luke 17:20-21; 1 Corinthians 15:24-28; Colossians 1:13; Revelation 1:6; 11:15; 21:3, 22-27; 22:1-5)

Salvation

Salvation is the restoration of human fellowship with God and the deliverance of the entire creation from the bondage of sin and death.  Salvation is given by the grace of God and experienced through faith in Jesus Christ, not earned by personal merit or good works.  God calls on every person to enter that divine fellowship, which has been secured for humanity in Jesus Christ and is embodied by him as the beloved of the Father at the Father’s right hand.

Salvation is …

  • the restoration of human fellowship with God and
      • 1 Corinthians 1:9    God is faithful, by whom ye were called unto the fellowship of his Son Jesus Christ our Lord.
  • the deliverance of the entire creation from the bondage of sin and death.
      • Romans 6:18    Being then made free from sin, ye became the servants of righteousness.
      • Romans 6:22-23    But now being made free from sin, and become servants to God, ye have your fruit unto holiness, and the end everlasting life.   23 For the wages of sin is death; but the gift of God is eternal life through Jesus Christ our Lord.
      • Romans 8:21-23   Because the creature itself also shall be delivered from the bondage of corruption into the glorious liberty of the children of God.  22 For we know that the whole creation groaneth and travaileth in pain together until now.  23 And not only they, but ourselves also, which have the firstfruits of the Spirit, even we ourselves groan within ourselves, waiting for the adoption, to wit, the redemption of our body.

Salvation is …

  • given by the grace of God
      • Ephesians 2:4-7     But God, who is rich in mercy, for his great love wherewith he loved us,  Even when we were dead in sins, hath quickened us together with Christ, (by grace ye are saved😉  And hath raised us up together, and made us sit together in heavenly places in Christ Jesus:  That in the ages to come he might shew the exceeding riches of his grace in his kindness toward us through Christ Jesus.
  • and experienced through faith in Jesus Christ,
      • Ephesians 2:8    For by grace are ye saved through faith; and that not of yourselves: it is the gift of God:
      • Ephesians 1:9-14   Having made known unto us the mystery of his will, according to his good pleasure which he hath purposed in himself: 10 That in the dispensation of the fulness of times he might gather together in one all things in Christ, both which are in heaven, and which are on earth; even in him: 11 In whom also we have obtained an inheritance, being predestinated according to the purpose of him who worketh all things after the counsel of his own will: 12 That we should be to the praise of his glory, who first trusted in Christ. 13 In whom ye also trusted, after that ye heard the word of truth, the gospel of your salvation: in whom also after that ye believed, ye were sealed with that holy Spirit of promise, 14 Which is the earnest of our inheritance until the redemption of the purchased possession, unto the praise of his glory.
  • not earned by personal merit or good works.
      • Ephesians 2:8-9    For by grace are ye saved through faith; and that not of yourselves: it is the gift of God:  Not of works, lest any man should boast.  10 For we are his workmanship, created in Christ Jesus unto good works, which God hath before ordained that we should walk in them.
      • Titus 3:4-7   But when the kindness and the love of God our Savior toward man appeared, not by works of righteousness which we have done, but according to His mercy He saved us, through the washing of regeneration and renewing of the Holy Spirit, whom He poured out on us abundantly through Jesus Christ our Savior, that having been justified by His grace we should become heirs according to the hope of eternal life.
      • 2 Timothy 1:8-9   Be not thou therefore ashamed of the testimony of our Lord, nor of me his prisoner: but be thou partaker of the afflictions of the gospel according to the power of God; Who hath saved us, and called us with an holy calling, not according to our works, but according to his own purpose and grace, which was given us in Christ Jesus before the world began,

God calls on every person …

  • to enter that divine fellowship, which has been secured for humanity in Jesus Christ and is embodied by him as the beloved of the Father at the Father’s right hand.

      • 1 Timothy 2:3-6    For this is good and acceptable in the sight of God our Saviour;  Who will have all men to be saved, and to come unto the knowledge of the truth.   For there is one God, and one mediator between God and men, the man Christ Jesus;   Who gave himself a ransom for all, to be testified in due time.
      • Colossians 3:1    If ye then be risen with Christ, seek those things which are above, where Christ sitteth on the right hand of God.
  • 2 Timothy 2:10   Therefore I endure all things for the elect’s sakes, that they may also obtain the salvation which is in Christ Jesus with eternal glory.

God’s Grace

God’s grace is free and unmerited and is expressed in everything he does.  By grace, the Father redeemed humanity and the entire cosmos from sin and death through Jesus Christ, and by grace, the Holy Spirit empowers humans to know and love the Father and Jesus Christ and thereby experience the joy of eternal salvation in the kingdom of God.

  • Ephesians 2:8-9   For by grace are ye saved through faith; and that not of yourselves:  it is the gift of God9 not of works, lest any man should boast.
  • 1 John 2:1-2   My little children, these things write I unto you, that ye sin not. And if any man sin, we have an advocate with the Father, Jesus Christ the righteous:  And he is the propitiation for our sins: and not for ours only, but also for the sins of the whole world.
  • Colossians 1:20    And, having made peace through the blood of his cross, by him to reconcile all things unto himself; by him, I say, whether they be things in earth, or things in heaven.
  • Romans 11:32    For God hath concluded them all in unbelief, that he might have mercy upon all.
  • Romans 8:19-21   For the earnest expectation of the creature waiteth for the manifestation of the sons of God.  20 For the creature was made subject to vanity, not willingly, but by reason of him who hath subjected the same in hope,  21 Because the creature itself also shall be delivered from the bondage of corruption into the glorious liberty of the children of God.
  • Romans 3:24    Being justified freely by his grace through the redemption that is in Christ Jesus:
  • Romans 5:2    By whom also we have access by faith into this grace wherein we stand, and rejoice in hope of the glory of God.
  • Romans 5:15-17, 21  But not as the offence, so also is the free gift.  For if through the offence of one many be dead, much more the grace of God, and the gift by grace, which is by one man, Jesus Christ, hath abounded unto many.  16 And not as it was by one that sinned, so is the gift: for the judgment was by one to condemnation, but the free gift is of many offences unto justification.  17 For if by one man’s offence death reigned by one; much more they which receive abundance of grace and of the gift of righteousness shall reign in life by one, Jesus Christ.)
  • Romans 5:21    That as sin hath reigned unto death, even so might grace reign through righteousness unto eternal life by Jesus Christ our Lord.
  • John 1:12     But as many as received him, to them gave he power to become the sons of God, even to them that believe on his name:
  • Titus 3:7   That being justified by his grace, we should be made heirs according to the hope of eternal life.

Faith in God

Faith in God is a gift of God, rooted in Jesus Christ and enlightened by the witness of the Holy Spirit in the Scriptures. Through faith, God prepares and enables our minds to participate in Jesus Christ’s communion with the Father by the Spirit. Jesus Christ is the Author and Perfecter of our faith.

  • Ephesians 2:8   For by grace are ye saved through faith; and that not of yourselves: it is the gift of God:
  • Romans 12:3    For I say, through the grace given unto me, to every man that is among you, not to think of himself more highly than he ought to think; but to think soberly, according as God hath dealt to every man the measure of faith.
  • Romans 10:17    So then faith cometh by hearing, and hearing by the word of God.
  • Hebrews 11:1    Now faith is the substance of things hoped for, the evidence of things not seen.
  • Romans 5:1-2  Therefore being justified by faith, we have peace with God through our Lord Jesus Christ:  By whom also we have access by faith into this grace wherein we stand, and rejoice in hope of the glory of God.
  • Romans 1:17   For therein is the righteousness of God revealed from faith to faith: as it is written, The just shall live by faith.
  • Romans 3:21-28    But now the righteousness of God without the law is manifested, being witnessed by the law and the prophets;  22 Even the righteousness of God which is by faith of Jesus Christ unto all and upon all them that believe: for there is no difference:  23 For all have sinned, and come short of the glory of God;  24 Being justified freely by his grace through the redemption that is in Christ Jesus:  25 Whom God hath set forth to be a propitiation through faith in his blood, to declare his righteousness for the remission of sins that are past, through the forbearance of God;  26 To declare, I say, at this time his righteousness: that he might be just, and the justifier of him which believeth in Jesus.   27 Where is boasting then? It is excluded. By what law? of works? Nay: but by the law of faith.   28 Therefore we conclude that a man is justified by faith without the deeds of the law.
  • Romans 11:6     And if by grace, then is it no more of works: otherwise grace is no more grace. But if it be of works, then it is no more grace: otherwise work is no more work.
  • Ephesians 3:12     In whom we have boldness and access with confidence by the faith of him.
  • 1 Corinthians 2:5    That your faith should not stand in the wisdom of men, but in the power of God.
  • Hebrews 12:2   Looking unto Jesus the author and finisher of our faith; who for the joy that was set before him endured the cross, despising the shame, and is set down at the right hand of the throne of God.

Repentance

Repentance toward God is a change of mind and attitude in response to the grace of God prompted by the Holy Spirit and grounded in the Word of God.  It includes awareness of personal sinfulness and trust in and allegiance to Jesus Christ through whom all humanity has been reconciled to God and accompanies a new life sanctified by the Holy Spirit through faith in Jesus Christ.

  • Acts 2:38   Then Peter said unto them, Repent, and be baptized every one of you in the name of Jesus Christ for the remission of sins, and ye shall receive the gift of the Holy Ghost.
  • 2 Corinthians 5:18-19   And all things are of God, who hath reconciled us to himself by Jesus Christ, and hath given to us the ministry of reconciliation;  19 To wit, that God was in Christ, reconciling the world unto himself, not imputing their trespasses unto them; and hath committed unto us the word of reconciliation.
  • Romans 2:4    Or despisest thou the riches of his goodness and forbearance and longsuffering; not knowing that the goodness of God leadeth thee to repentance?
  • Romans 10:17    So then faith cometh by hearing, and hearing by the word of God.
  • Colossians 1:19-20   For it pleased the Father that in him should all fulness dwell;  20 And, having made peace through the blood of his cross, by him to reconcile all things unto himself; by him, I say, whether they be things in earth, or things in heaven.
  • Romans 12:2   And be not conformed to this world: but be ye transformed by the renewing of your mind, that ye may prove what is that good, and acceptable, and perfect, will of God.
