Discipleship 101

Lesson 2

MAN (Humanity)

Are HUMANS different from animals?

• • Yes

How are HUMANS different from animals?

• • Animals do things by instinct … humans do things by choice and will.

Why do you think HUMANS are different from animals?

• • They were created differently by God … to be different.
  • Compare Genesis 1:24-25 with Genesis 1:26
  • Genesis 1:24-25   ²⁴ Then God said, “Let the earth bring forth the living creature according to its kind: cattle and creeping thing and beast of the earth, each according to its kind”; and it was so. ²⁵ And God made the beast of the earth according to its kind, cattle according to its kind, and everything that creeps on the earth according to its kind. And God saw that it was good.
  • Genesis 1:26    ²⁶ Then God said, “Let Us make man in Our image, according to Our likeness; let them have dominion over the fish of the sea, over the birds of the air, and over the cattle, over ^[g]all the earth and over every creeping thing that creeps on the earth.”
  • Whereas each type of animal was created “according to its kind”, Man was created in the image of God (according to the God kind).

Where do you think HUMANS came from?

• • Some people say evolution …
  • We say God.
  • Psalm 8:4, 3-5    When I consider Your heavens, the work of Your fingers, the moon and the stars, which You have ordained,  ⁴ What is man that You are mindful of him, and the son of man that You visit^[c] him?   ⁵ For You have made him a little lower than ^[d]the angels,

Why do you think people believe HUMANS were created by God?

• • The number of systems within the human body.
  • The complexity of the systems that have to work in harmony.
  • That number of systems … and the level of complexity in each system … is evidence of incredibly intelligent design and power.
  • Psalm 139:14-16   I will praise You, for I am fearfully and wonderfully made;  marvelous are Your works, and that my soul knows very well.  ¹⁵ My frame was not hidden from You, when I was made in secret and skillfully wrought in the lowest parts of the earth.   ¹⁶ Your eyes saw my substance, being yet unformed.  And in Your book they all were written, the days fashioned for me, when as yet there were none of them.

Do you think there is a purpose for HUMANS on earth?

• • 1 Samuel 12:24 ;  Only fear the Lord, and serve Him in truth with all your heart; for consider what great things He has done for you.
  • Psalm 100:3  Know that the Lord, He is God; It is He who has made us, and ^[a]not we ourselves;  We are His people and the sheep of His pasture.
  • Psalm 100:2  Serve the Lord with gladness; Come before His presence with singing.
  • Ecclesiastes 12:13   Let us hear the conclusion of the whole matter: Fear God and keep His commandments, For this is man’s all ^{[the whole duty of Man~ KJV]}.
  • 1 Corinthians 10:31  Therefore, whether you eat or drink, or whatever you do, do all to the glory of God.
  • Proverbs 3:5-6   Trust in the Lord with all your heart, and lean not on your own understanding;  ⁶ In all your ways acknowledge Him, And He shall ^[a]direct your paths.
    • What the verses above speak to is a relationship with God.  In other words, God created humans in His image because He wanted a relationship with Man that was unique – different from any other relationship He would have with anyone or anything else in the created universe.
  • But … it seems … there is more …
    • Psalm 8:6-8    You have made him to have dominion over the works of Your hands; You have put all things under his feet, ⁷ All sheep and oxen — even the beasts of the field, ⁸ the birds of the air, and the fish of the sea that pass through the paths of the seas.

Do you think HUMANS would ever come to understand the purpose for their lives?

• • Yes,   but only with God’s help

How do you think HUMANS would come to understand that purpose?

• • Only by revelation from God
