INTRODUCTION
A. Can a Christian lose his/her salvation? Can a person once in Christ ever go back to be in Adam again?
- Some say YES. Some say NO. What do you say?
B. Let’s ask another question: Can a butterfly ever become a Caterpillar again?
- The answer is obviously NO.
C. Similarly, I believe, the answer to the original question is also NO. A Christian, who is born again, cannot lose his/her salvation … just as a butterfly cannot become a caterpillar once that caterpillar has been “born again” as a butterfly.
D. A Christian, once in Christ, cannot go back to being in Adam.
- In 2 Corinthians 5:17, Paul tells us that if any man or woman be in Christ (NOTE the positional phrase), he or she is a new creation and old things have passed away.
- The illustration of a “new creation” that might help in this discussion is that of a butterfly, which was once a caterpillar.
-
- When a Caterpillar goes into the cocoon it comes out a radically new creature.
- It is the same Caterpillar, in the sense that a caterpillar goes into the cocoon as a caterpillar, but comes out in a radical new creation — that is a butterfly.
- Can that butterfly ever go back and become the caterpillar it was once again?
- The answer would be NO.

E In our last session, we looked at some of the PRINCIPLES of Eternal Security.
F. In this session, we begin our look at 17 PROOFS of Eternal Security (as enumerated by Tom Murray of TSF).
1. Reasons That Are Dependent On God The Father Alone
2. Reasons That Are Dependent On God The Son Alone
3. Reasons That Are Dependent On God The Holy Spirit Alone
4. The Apostle Paul’s Teaching In Romans 8:1-39
5. The Very Meaning Of Eternal Rules Out The Possibility Of Loss
6. Reasons That Are Dependent On Christ’s Finished Work
7. The Apostle Peter’s Teaching In I Peter 1:4-5
8. Being A New Creation Means Old Things Have Passed Away
9. God’s Grace Guarantees Your Security
10. Christ’s Complete Obedience To The Work Of His Father
11. The Father’s Seed Abides In You Forever
12. Your Eternal Salvation Is God’s Gift – Not A Reward Or Wages
13. Your Salvation Involved A Final And Unchangeable Birth
14. You Are Incapable of Saving or Securing Yourself
15. God Paid Too High A Price For You
16. Your Journey Sins Are Disciplined, But Not By Loss Of Salvation
17. God’s Warnings Are Exhortations, Not Threats of Loss of Salvation
G. If you look at those proofs, you will see that three (3) of them are reasons where God (as Father, Son and Holy Spirit) plays a role in our eternal security. That is to say … God The Father plays a role … God the Son plays a role … and God the Holy Spirit plays a role. All three are involved in our salvation … and our eternal security (the securing of that salvation).
H. In this session, we plan to start looking at reasons that are dependent upon God, the Father as to why a person once in Christ positionally can never ever lose that position in Christ and go back to a position in Adam … similar to how a butterfly can never go back and being a caterpillar. Those reasons are divided into four (4) categories:
- Your heavenly Father has eternal plans and purposes for you.
- Your heavenly Father has the power to keep you.
- Your heavenly Father has an infinite love for you.
- Your heavenly Father has made specific promises to you
Let’s dive in.
1. Your heavenly Father has eternal plans and purposes for you.
a. Now being justified, you will, one day, be glorified. (Romans 8:28-30)
b. He is the one who confirms you to the end. (1 Corinthians 1:8)
c. You were chosen to bring eternal glory to God. (Ephesians 1:4, 11-12)
d. That in the ages to come He might show you more of His mercy. (Ephesians 2:7)
e. He is the one working in you to accomplish His will and purpose. (Philippians 2:12-13)
f. He plans to bring many sons to glory. (Hebrews 2:10; Philippians 1:6)
2. Your heavenly Father has the power to keep you.
a. He gives you eternal life and you can never perish. (John 10:25-29)
b. What He promised you, He is also able to perform. (Romans 4:21)
c. Nothing can separate you from God’s love. (Romans 8:31, 38-39)
d. God is able to make you stand. (Romans 14:4)
e. Your life is hidden in God. (Colossians 3:3)
f. He keeps what you have committed to Him. (2 Timothy 1:12)
g. He will preserve your spirit, soul, and body. (1 Thessalonians 5:23-24)
h. He will save you to the uttermost. (Hebrews 7:25)
i. He will keep you from stumbling and present you faultless. (Jude 1:24)
3. Your heavenly Father has an infinite love for you.
a. His infinite love provided you salvation as His enemy and now provides you security as His friend. (Romans 5:7-10)
b. He has chosen you and will keep you forever. (Ephesians 1:4; 1 Peter 1:3-5)
4. Your heavenly Father has made specific promises to you.
a. The Father promises that you cannot ever perish. (John 3:16)
b. The Father promises that you have already passed from death to life. (John 5:24)
c. The Father confirms His promise with an oath. (Hebrews 6:16-18)

- Your Father has chosen you to be without blame.
- Your Father has promised that you can never perish.
- Your Father has promised you have already passed from death to life.
- Your Father has made promises to you and sealed them with an oath.
Now there are 6 facets to the role that your father plays.
1. The first of those is that your Father has a sovereign purpose in all that He does
a. The first facet of the Father’s purpose is that All justified will be glorified and that includes you.
-
- Romans 8:28-30 we know that all things work together for good for those who love God and those who are called according to his purpose
- The father has a sovereign purpose and in Christ you have been called according to his purpose
- for whom he foreknew, he also predestined to be conformed to the image of his son that he might be the first born among many brethren. Moreover whom he predestined these he also called and whom he called these he also justified and whom he justified these he also glorified.
- One of the sovereign purposes of your heavenly Father is that … once you have been justified, it is his sovereign purpose that you will be glorified.
- God does not say only some who have been truly saved are going to persevere to the end and make it. Nor does the father say only some who are justified will eventually be glorified.
- What he does state in this passage through the apostle Paul is that all who have been justified are also guaranteed to be glorified by God their Father.
- So your eternal security is assured by your Heavenly Father’s sovereign purpose that you be glorified one day.
b. The second facet is that the Father will confirm you to the end.
-
- 1 Corinthians 1:8-9 … who will also confirm you to the end that you may be blameless (not sinless, but blameless) in the day of our Lord Jesus Christ
- another purpose in God’s sovereign plan for you is that you will be confirmed until the end by his grace,
- NOT by your works and
- the end he calls the day of Jesus Christ that refers to the day that Jesus returns to the earth
- In God’s sovereign purpose, all justified will be glorified and in his purpose he will confirm you to the end in Christ.
c. The third facet of the father’s sovereign purpose is that you were chosen to bring glory to him.
-
- Ephesians 1:4, 11-12 Paul wrote just as he chose each of us in him that is in Christ before the foundation of the world that we should be holy and without blame before him in love in whom that is Christ we also have obtained an inheritance being predestined according to the purpose of him who works all things according to the counsel or to the purpose of his will purpose.
- Ephesians 4:12 … we who first trusted in Christ should be to the praise of his glory in the sovereign of your heavenly father
- That purpose includes your being chosen to bring glory to him.
- The very choosing by God of you as his child in Christ shows and guarantees your eternal security.
- If the father knew, in his omniscience (ability to know all things: the beginning and the end), that you would one day lose your salvation, He would never have chosen you because your loss of salvation would not be to the praise of his glory in eternity
d. The fourth facet is so that in the ages to come, He might show more of His mercy to you.
-
- Ephesians 2:7 in the ages to come, He, the Father might show the exceeding riches of his grace of his kindness toward us in Christ Jesus
- Your father’s sovereign purpose states that while you are now experiencing his mercy in your salvation journey on earth, you will, in the ages to come, receive even greater displays of His mercy
- you are secure because God the father plans in the ages to come to show you more of his mercy.
- Now, this purpose of God is not possible if you might not be around to experience his riches and his mercy in the ages to come
- so in the sovereign purpose of God,
-
-
- all justified will be glorified
- he will confirm you to the end
- you were chosen to bring him glory
- He he wants to show you more of his mercy
-
e. The fifth facet is that he is working in you to accomplish his will and his purpose.
-
- Philippians 2:12-13 Therefore my beloved as you have always obeyed not as in my presence only but now much more in my absence work out your own salvation with fear for it is God who works in you both to will and to do of his good pleasure.
- Your heavenly father is working in you to accomplish his will.
- Not only is your receiving salvation a work of God the father, but the retaining of your salvation is His work.
- You cannot lose your salvation — or your position in Christ — because your salvation is dependent, NOT upon you, BUT upon your Father’s will and His sovereign purpose.
f. the sixth facet of God’s sovereign purpose is that He plans to bring many sons to glory.
-
- Hebrews 2:10 for it was fitting for him for whom are all things, and by whom are all things, in bringing many sons and daughters to glory, to make the author of their salvation perfect through sufferings.
- the many spoken of here means all of those who have put their trust in the person and work of Jesus Christ.
- What He began in you at your conversion he will consummate at your glorification.
- Philippians 1:6 being confident of this very thing, that He who has begun a good work in you will complete it until the day of Jesus Christ;
Summary …
- that now being justified you will be glorified
- that he the father will confirm you to the end that is the day of Jesus Christ
- that in Christ you were chosen to bring glory to God for eternity God would get no glory if you weren’t there any eternity
- then that in the ages to come he might show more of his mercy to you and he can’t do that if you’re not around to receive it
- he is working in you to accomplish his will and purpose so the burden of your security rests upon his work and not upon yours
- and lastly, He plan is to take you to glory.
2. The second part of the father’s purpose when your security is His power to keep you.
Now we’re going to look at 9 different facets to the father’s power to keep you.
a. The first one is that he gives you eternal life and you can never perish.
-
- John 10:25-29 Jesus answered them I told you and you do not believe the works that I do in my father’s name they bear witness of me but you do not believe because you are not of my sheep. As I said to you, my sheep hear my voice and I know them and they follow me and I give unto them eternal life (not temporary life, not conditional life, not probational life until the next time you fail) it says I give to them eternal life and then, to nail the nail, Jesus said and they shall never perish. Neither shall anyone snatch them out of my hand. My Father, who has given them to me (notice that it was the father who gave you to Christ) is greater than all, and no one is able to snatch anyone (in Christ) out of my Father’s hand.
- Because you are in Christ and Christ is in you, you have eternal life.
- If the word eternal means anything, it means just that; it is eternal.
- If you could lose your salvation, then you never ever possessed eternal life … You only possess temporary life.
- Notice that Jesus says that the father gives you eternal life through Christ and then says you shall never perish.
- Could Jesus confirm your eternal security anymore plainly in that statement?
- What the Father gives him no man is able to take out of the Father’s hand.
- So, the first facet of the Father’s power to keep you is that … He gives you eternal life in Jesus said you could never perish
b. The second facet of the Father’s power to keep you is that what the Father has promised you He is able Himself to perform.
-
- Romans 4:21 and being fully convinced that what He the Father had promised He the Father was able to perform
- Since God has promised to keep you, He will do it because he is able to do it.
- God’s character and his power guarantees that he will keep his promise to you regarding your eternal security. (i.e. because you are justified in Christ you will be glorified in Christ.)
- Your condition does NOT determine the security of your position.
- The second facet, then, is that what God has promised you he is able to perform in that all justified will be glorified
c. our third facet in the father’s power to keep you is that nothing can separate you from God’s love that is once you are in the love of God in Christ (positionally) nothing can separate you
-
- Romans 8:31 that what then shall we say to these things if God is for us who can be against us and then in Romans 8:38 and 39, he said for I am persuaded that neither death nor life nor angels nor principalities nor powers nor things present nor things to come nor height nor depth nor any other created thing you’ll be able to separate us from the love of God which is in Christ Jesus our Lord
- do you see the positional phrase nothing can separate us from the love of God that is in Christ Jesus
- our security is in our position not in our condition
- can you think of anything that can separate you from the love of God that Paul did not cover in that passage
- while there is not one it is your position in Christ that guarantees you will never ever be separated from the love of God
d. now the 4th facet in God’s power to keep you is that God is able to make you stand.
-
- in Romans 14:4, Paul said who are you to judge then judge another servant to his own master he stands or falls indeed he will be made to stand
- now notice for God is able to make him stand because God is able to make you stand, stand you will
- it is in his power that you will stand sure and it is not in your merit or your performance or your determination
e. now the 5th facet of God’s power to keep you once you are in Christ is that your life is hidden in God
-
- in Colossians 3:3, Paul said for you died and your life is hidden with Christ in God
- your life and therefore your salvation is so hidden in God that his power keeps you from ever being lost again
- the minute you became a Christian Jesus wrapped his hands around you and then the father placed his hands around the son’s hand and there is no one who can separate you from that secure position
f. The sixth facet of your father’s power to keep you once you are in Christ is that He keeps what you have committed to him.
-
- 2Timothy 1:12 for this reason I also suffer these things nevertheless I’m not ashamed for I know whom I have believed and am persuaded that he that is God the father is able to keep what I have committed unto him until that day
- well what have you committed to God until that day you’re glorified?
- well you have committed yourself … and he has the power to keep that which you have committed — yourself and your life … and he has the power to keep what you have committed until that day (that is the day of Jesus Christ when he returns in glory)
g. The 7th facet of God’s power to keep you is that He will preserve you spirit soul and body.
-
- in 1 Thessalonians 5:23 and 24 Paul said now may the God of peace himself sanctify you completely and may your whole spirit soul and body be preserved blameless (not sinless but blameless) at the coming of our Lord Jesus Christ
- he (that is the father) who calls you is faithful, who also will do it.
- he will do it … your father will preserve to perfect glorification your body your soul and your spirit … for he who calls you is faithful who also will do it
- your eternal security rests on God’s power to keep you
- and his guaranteed to do that until the coming of the lord jesus to get you
h. The 8th facet of God’s power to keep you is that He will save you to the uttermost.
-
- Hebrews 7:25 therefore he (the father) is also able to save to the uttermost those who come to God (and here’s our positional phrase) through him since he ever lives to make intercession for them.
- God’s power has saved you to the uttermost.
- If you could be lost again, once you are saved in Christ, then your security was really not very long in duration … and it would certainly fall short of the uttermost.
i. The 9th facet of God’s power to keep you is the father is that He will keep you from stumbling and He will present you faultless.
-
- Jude wrote in Jude 1:24 now to him that is God the father who is able to keep you from stumbling and to present you faultless (not sinless just faultless) before the presence of his glory the exceeding joy
- Your father is able to keep you from stumbling back into Adam or to lose your salvation and he has the power to present you faultless in the day of Christ glory
- this is true because he has the power to keep everyone who is in Christ from ever stumbling and being placed back in Adam in under condemnation
- notice that he will keep you not sinless but faultless
well let’s review that the Father has the power to keep you in nine different ways:
- he gives you eternal life not temporary probational conditional life and you can never perish
- secondly what he has promised you he is also able to perform that is all justified will be glorified
- thirdly nothing can separate you from the love of God that is in Christ Jesus not angels not demons you cannot even separate yourself
- fourthly God is able to make you stand in that day you are not able to hang on to yeah but he has the power to hang on to you then your life is hid in God your life is so invested in God that you can never be separated then he keeps what you have committed to him against that day and you have committed yourself to him and he will preserve your spirit soul and body until the day of Jesus Christ and
- your father has the power to save you to the uttermost
- and your father has the power to keep you from stumbling back into Adam and to present you faultless before the throne of his glory
3. The third reason that is dependent upon the father that guarantees your eternal security and mine is your father’s infinite (not finite not conditional not probational) love.
God loves with an infinite love that means it can never end
IF you can experience God’s infinite love at the moment of your salvation and then lose your salvation, God’s love was not infinite … it would have been finite.
Let’s look at 2 clear proofs of God’s infinite love for you
a. the first one is his infinite love provided you salvation as his enemy and his infinite love now provides you security as his friend.
-
- Romans 5:7-10 for scarcely for a righteous man to one die yet perhaps for a good man someone would even dare to die but God the father demonstrated his own love toward us in that while we were still sinners that is his enemies …. Christ died for us (that is the infinite love of God in salvation for you and I) … then Paul goes on much more after you’ve been saved … then having now been justified by the blood of Jesus Christ we shall be saved from wrath (the wrath that is coming upon all those in Adam) through him that is our security
- So we have the infinite love of God in salvation in that while we were enemies Christ died for us but then Paul says much more having been justified we shall be saved by the infinite love of God from the from the wrath that is coming through him that is in Christ or through Christ there’s our security for if when we were enemies we were reconciled to God through the death of his son much more (there’s more than that) having been reconciled (that’s salvation) we shall be saved (that’s security) by his life
- if God’s infinite love sent his son to die for you and me when we were his enemy, he certainly will keep you in his infinite love now that you are his friend and his child
- Since He provided salvation when you were his enemy, he now promises to provide security now that you are his friend and his child
now a second facet of God’s infinite love for you is that he has chosen you and he will keep you forever
in Ephesians 1:4 listen to what Paul said just as he the father chose us in him (that’s our positional phrase) in Christ before the foundation of the world that we should be holy and without blame (not sinless but without blame) before him in love
your father’s infinite love has chosen you his infinite love has chosen you in order to keep you holy forever without blame that could affect your eternal security
you are not sinless as long as you are in this body, but his infinite love makes you blameless … and it’s only if you could become blamed again that he could condemn you and put you back in Adam
well that’s where we’ll end our broadcast today
in review we found that the father has an infinite love and his infinite love was provided for you in salvation when you were his enemy and his infinite love is given to you in security now that you are his friend and child … and he has chosen you and will keep you forever
we’ll pick up there in our next broadcast
thank you Tom if you’ve ever had doubt about your security in Christ I know that this series of lessons will mean a lot to you make plans to join us daily and tell a friend about the program if you’d like to learn how you can be a part of the weekly hour long classes the Tom teaches or if you’d like a copy of today’s program please call us at truth seekers fellowship that number is 6853385 6853385 thank you for listening today and we hope you’ll join us next time for the latest cycle

Welcome to the Lay Disciple, a ministry of truth seekers fellowship with Memphis yesterday Tom Murray shared how nothing can separate us from God’s love and if God is for us who can be against us join us now as we continue the third lesson in this series concerning the eternal security of the believer
In today’s broadcast, we are going to continue our study in the security of the believer in answering the question of can a person who has been saved ever lose their position in Christ and be put back in Adam? or to put it another way is Can a butterfly ever go back and become a Caterpillar again?
well the answer is no
but we’ve been finding the reasons and
our first reason we found are the reasons that are dependent upon God the father
we have already studied that
you are secure because of your heavenly father’s sovereign purpose
and
you are secure because of your heavenly father’s power to keep you
and
you are secure because of your father’s infinite love for you
and
in today’s broadcast we’re gonna look at your security that is based upon the father’s promises that he makes to you
we’re going to be looking at 3 proofs from the father’s promises
one of those is that
you cannot perish
in John 3:16 a very familiar verse Jesus said to nicodemus for God so loved the world now the world refers to all those that he gave his only begotten son Christ that whoever believes in him should not perish but have everlasting life (not temporary not conditional not probational)
your father has made a very specific promise to you that you cannot perish and that not being able to perish is a promise of eternal security and his promises can never become null and void
you can never perish if you can lose your salvation and end up in hell then obviously you can perish but this passage promises that because you have accepted Jesus as your savior you will not perish
and you, now, at this moment, have everlasting life
well if you could have everlasting life for one moment and lose it you never had everlasting life because if you could lose it, it wasn’t everlasting to begin with
but secondly God makes a promise that you have passed from death unto life in John 5:24 most assuredly I say to you he who hears my word and believes in him who sent me Jesus said has everlasting life that is our word again and shall not come into judgment but has passed now not in the future but now has passed from death into life
now this passage from Jesus in John 524 clearly teaches that you have already passed from death unto life and the promise is that you already at this moment have eternal life John said in first John 5 1112 and 13 he who has the son has life eternal life if you have Christ in your heart for one minute you have eternal life
at your new birth you pass from spiritual death to spiritual life and spiritual life is eternal life
spiritual life is God’s life which can never die
scripture always emphasizes that believers have eternal life at this present time and if it could be lost it was never eternal it was only temporary
now the third promise your father makes to you is that your security rests upon his promise and his oath
in Hebrews 6:6-18 the writer says for men indeed swear by the greater and an oath for confirmation is for them an end to all dispute
what does that mean?
well when I was a kid and we used to have someone come and tell us something that we couldn’t hardly believe we would make them swear an oath and they would say I swear on my mother’s grave or if I’m lying let me die we would have all kinds of little statements we would say as as kids do you swear and hope to die if you’re not telling the truth and when the kid said I swear then we would accept that and it would settle all disputes
the same thing is true in the courtroom when we say do you promise to tell the truth the whole truth and nothing but the truth so help you God and the person says I do then that end ends it is a confirmation for all them and an end of all dispute
now that’s how we settle things in that we swear to God … we swear by the greater in front of people but in verse 17 the writer and Hebrew says thus God even though he is not a man thus God determining to show more abundantly to the heirs of his promise the immutability of his counsel … God did something that God never needs to do … he confirmed his promise by an oath
now we swear to the truth by God but who does God’s swear by?
well he swears by himself
in verse 18 that by two immutable things in which it is impossible for God to lie we might have a strong consolation who have fled for refuge to lay hold of the hope that is set before us
now this passage clearly teaches that your eternal security and mind rest upon the promise and the oath of God … as if his promise to you was not enough God has added his own oath
does God really need to make an oath to you to promise you security?
now men as we said make oaths to prove their sincerity and to confirm their intent and God added his oath to his promise to reaffirm that what he has promised you he will do
his promise and his oath to you is that you are going to be kept safe until you arrive safely into his presence … either at your death or when Jesus comes to get you
now in God’s promises to you we have learned that
you cannot perish because God said you will never perish God promised
you have passed from death into life already and thirdly your security rests upon his promise and oath not upon your performance
now before we leave all the reasons that are dependent upon God the father in this broadcast
I’d like to review with you the reasons that are dependent upon your heavenly father for your eternal security you mustn’t look at your condition to determine your position your position is to serve and determine the moment you receive Jesus as savior but let me just review with you the reasons for your eternal security that are dependent upon your heavenly father not upon your performance
first of all because he has justified you in Christ you will be glorified
because he has confirmed you to the end in Christ
because you were chosen to bring him glory in eternity
because he will show you more mercy in future ages
because he works to accomplish his will and his purpose
and because he plans to bring you to glory you are secure
because he gives you eternal life and you cannot perish you are secure
because he has promised and he is able to perform what he promises you are secure
because nothing can separate you from the love of God that is in Christ you are secure
because he is able to make you stand in the day of Jesus Christ you are secure
because your life is hid in God you are secure
because he keeps what you have committed yourself and your eternal future you are secure in Christ
because he preserves your spirit your soul and your body blameless until the day of Jesus Christ you are secure
because the father has saved to the uttermost you are secure in your position in Christ because the father keeps you from stumbling to present you faultless before his throne in glory you are secure in Christ
because the father loves you with an infinite love and he has saved you when you were his enemy you are secure in your position in Christ
because you are now the father’s friend and his child you are secure in his infinite love
because the father has chosen you to be without blame without sin in this life you are secure in your position in Christ
because the father’s promises and one of those promises being that you can never perish you are secure in your position in Christ
because Jesus says you have already passed from death spiritual death to spiritual life you are secure in your position in Christ
and because your security rests upon the promises and yes even the oath of God the father you could swear by no greater than himself and the writer and Hebrew said and therefore God wanting to give us great comfort and consolation swore by himself that justified will be glorified
what an incredible thing?
now we’ve been looking in our last few broadcasts that all the reasons for the security of any believer in Christ that are dependent just upon God the father
