Friday DIVE – 23August2024 – Role of The Trinity in Eternal Security

OPENING COMMENTS.

  • Can anyone be sure he/she is going to Heaven?
      • Notice 2 Timothy 4:6-8 and 1 John 5:13 … It seems clear that the Apostle Paul knew and the Apostle John knew, for sure, that they’d be going to Heaven.
      • We shouldn’t be surprised, therefore, to find that some Christians today also know, for sure, that they’ll be going to Heaven.

SPS – To talk about what is called the ASSURANCE OF SALVATION.

  • I think I should begin by telling you what ASSURANCE OF SALVATION is NOT
  • because many persons confuse ASSURANCE OF SALVATION and ETERNAL SECURITY
  • … but the two are very different.
  • What is ASSURANCE OF SALVATION?

ASSURANCE is  Confidence or certainty … freedom from doubt and uncertainty

ASSURANCE OF SALVATION, then, is  “the confidence and conviction which a believer has  that the penalty of his sins has been paid  and that heaven has been secured as his eternal destiny by Christ’s death and resurrection.”   (from Nelson’s Illustrated Bible Dictionary

  • What is ETERNAL SECURITY?

ETERNAL SECURITY is  “that continuous operation of the Holy Spirit in you by which the work of divine grace that was begun in your heart is continued and brought to completion.”    (Tom Murray of Truth Seekers Fellowship).

  • Note the DIFFERENCE:
        • Assurance of salvation is something we have … a confidence … a mental construct.
            • Eternal Security is something that God gives … a reality, based on God’s word (and promises).
        • Assurance of salvation is something that can be lost … because it depends on us.
            • Eternal Security is something that we cannot lose … because it does ot depend on us … It is irrevocable
        • Assurance of salvation is a confidence that a person has IF he believes the doctrine of Eternal Security.
            • Eternal Security is something a believer has WHETHER he believes in it or not.

Assurance of Salvation is  what we have IF we believe the doctrine of Eternal Security.

Despite the differences between ASSURANCE OF SALVATION and ETERNAL SECURITY, there is a link that we must keep in mind.  To understand that link, we need to understand three things about salvation: 1) salvation is by grace; 2) salvation is not by faith and 3) salvation is in Christ.

1.  Salvation is BY GRACE

  • Ephesians 2:8  For by grace you have been saved through faith, and that not of yourselves; it is the gift of God,
  • Titus 3:3-5  For we ourselves also were sometimes foolish, disobedient, deceived, serving divers lusts and pleasures, living in malice and envy, hateful, and hating one another.  But after that the kindness and love of God our Saviour toward man appeared,  5 Not by works of righteousness which we have done, but according to his mercy he saved us, by the washing of regeneration, and renewing of the Holy Ghost
      • Titus 3:5 (NIV) 5 He saved us, not because of righteous things we had done, but because of his mercy.  He saved us through the washing of rebirth and renewal by the Holy Spirit,
  • 2 Timothy 1:8-9  Therefore do not be ashamed of the testimony of our Lord, nor of me His prisoner, but share with me in the sufferings for the gospel according to the power of Godwho has saved us and called us with a holy calling, not according to our works, but according to His own purpose and grace which was given to us in Christ Jesus before time began,

2.  Salvation is NOT BY FAITH

  • Ephesians 2:8-9    For by grace you have been saved through faith, and that not of yourselves; it is the gift of God, 9 not of works, lest anyone should boast.
      • It is important to understand this point because to say that a person is saved BY faith is to mean that the person is saved BECAUSE OF his/her faith … and that would make his faith a kind of “works” (something he had to do).
      • The truth is that God did not give us faith to believe so that we could be saved, but, rather, He gave us faith to believe that we have been saved (already … even before we believed).

3.  Salvation is IN CHRIST

  • 2 Timothy 2:10  Therefore I endure all things for the sake of the [a]elect, that they also may obtain the salvation which is in Christ Jesus with eternal glory.
      • Romans 3:24  being justified freely by His grace through the redemption that is in Christ Jesus,
      • Romans 6:23    For the wages of sin is death, but the gift of God is eternal life in Christ Jesus our Lord.
      • Ephesians 1:7  In Him we have redemption through His blood, the forgiveness of sins, according to the riches of His grace

Where did this idea of  eternal security come from?

  • More than just an “idea”, ETERNAL SECURIY is a concept that is revealed in the Bible.
  • We have SECURITY because that’s what salvation implies/means.  The fact that we “have been saved” (perfect tense) means we have been made safe and secure … and that security is a present reality — a certainty in the present.  So how can we be sure that our salvation (and security) will be a certainty in the future?
  • Our security is ETERNAL because our salvation is IN CHRIST (2 Tim.2:10) … and He is eternal (Romans 5:9).  See Romans 5:3-4, 5-7, 8-11 for context.
      • Our SECURITY is ETERNAL because our salvation is a future certainty, as well as a present reality.
      • In the PRESENT … Ephesians 2:8; 2 Timothy 2:10.
      • In the FUTURE ….. Philippians 1:6

will be a certainty in the future because we have eternal security.  We have ETERNAL security because our salvation is IN CHRIST
