Sunday LinkUp – 21May2023

In our final week of the Easter season, we look forward to Pentecost, which celebrates the coming of the Holy Spirit.  The theme for this week is getting on with God’s work.

  • Our first reading will remind us that God cares for the lonely and the prisoners, suggesting that we have an active role in leading them in singing and praise.
  • In our second reading, we will be reminded of Jesus’ prayer for the disciples, where He recalls that they have been chosen by the Father, and he prays for their protection as they remain in the world following his Ascension (to do what He wants them to do).
  • In our third reading, we are exhorted to cast our worries on God so we can stand firm in doing God’s work amidst any challenges or trials we have to endure.
  • In the sermon today, we will be reminded of the gentle rebuke from the angels following Jesus’ Ascension, reminding the disciples that they have a commissiona work to get on with.

FIRST READING

Psalm 68:1-10, 32-35

Let God arise, Let His enemies be scattered; Let those also who hate Him flee before Him.
As smoke is driven away, So drive them away;  As wax melts before the fire, So let the wicked perish at the presence of God.   But let the righteous be glad; Let them rejoice before God; Yes, let them rejoice exceedingly.

Sing to God, sing praises to His name; Extol[a] Him who rides on the [b]clouds, By His name [c]Yah, And rejoice before Him.

A father of the fatherless, a defender of widows, Is God in His holy habitation.
God sets the solitary in families;  He brings out those who are bound into prosperity; But the rebellious dwell in a dry land.

O God, when You went out before Your people, When You marched through the wilderness, Selah
The earth shook; The heavens also dropped rain at the presence of God;  Sinai itself was moved at the presence of God, the God of Israel.
You, O God, sent a plentiful rain, Whereby You confirmed Your inheritance, When it was weary.
10 Your congregation dwelt in it; You, O God, provided from Your goodness for the poor.

32 Sing to God, you kingdoms of the earth; Oh, sing praises to the Lord, Selah
33 To Him who rides on the heaven of heavenswhich were of old!  Indeed, He sends out His voice, a mighty voice.
34 Ascribe strength to God; His excellence is over Israel, And His strength is in the clouds.
35 O God, You are more awesome than Your holy places.  The God of Israel is He who gives strength and power to His people.

SECOND READING

John 17:1-11

Jesus spoke these words, lifted up His eyes to heaven, and said: “Father, the hour has come. Glorify Your Son, that Your Son also may glorify You, as You have given Him authority over all flesh, that He [a]should give eternal life to as many as You have given Him. And this is eternal life, that they may know You, the only true God, and Jesus Christ whom You have sent. I have glorified You on the earth. I have finished the work which You have given Me to do. And now, O Father, glorify Me together [b]with Yourself, with the glory which I had with You before the world was.

“I have [c]manifested Your name to the men whom You have given Me out of the world. They were Yours, You gave them to Me, and they have kept Your word. Now they have known that all things which You have given Me are from You. For I have given to them the words which You have given Me; and they have received them, and have known surely that I came forth from You; and they have believed that You sent Me.

“I pray for them. I do not pray for the world but for those whom You have given Me, for they are Yours. 10 And all Mine are Yours, and Yours are Mine, and I am glorified in them. 11 Now I am no longer in the world, but these are in the world, and I come to You. Holy Father, keep[d] through Your name those whom You have given Me, that they may be one as We are.

  • Keynote Passage:

THIRD READING

1 Peter 4:12-14, 5:6-11

Beloved, do not think it strange concerning the fiery trial which is to try you, as though some strange thing happened to you; 13 but rejoice to the extent that you partake of Christ’s sufferings, that when His glory is revealed, you may also be glad with exceeding joy. 14 If you are [a]reproached for the name of Christ, blessed are you, for the Spirit of glory and of God rests upon you. [b]On their part He is blasphemed, but on your part He is glorified.

Therefore humble yourselves under the mighty hand of God, that He may exalt you in due time, casting all your care upon Him, for He cares for you.

Be [a]sober, be [b]vigilant; [c]because your adversary the devil walks about like a roaring lion, seeking whom he may devour. Resist him, steadfast in the faith, knowing that the same sufferings are experienced by your brotherhood in the world. 10 But [d]may the God of all grace, who called [e]us to His eternal glory by Christ Jesus, after you have suffered a while, [f]perfect, establish, strengthen, and settle you. 11 To Him be the glory and the dominion forever and ever. Amen.

SERMON

You Shall Be My Witnesses …

Acts 1:6-14

Therefore, when they had come together, they asked Him, saying, “Lord, will You at this time restore the kingdom to Israel?”  And He said to them, “It is not for you to know times or seasons which the Father has put in His own authority.  But you shall receive power when the Holy Spirit has come upon you; and you shall be witnesses to Me in Jerusalem, and in all Judea and Samaria, and to the end of the earth.”

Now when He had spoken these things, while they watched, He was taken up, and a cloud received Him out of their sight.  10 And while they looked steadfastly toward heaven as He went up, behold, two men stood by them in white apparel, 11 who also said, “Men of Galilee, why do you stand gazing up into heaven?  This same Jesus, who was taken up from you into heaven, will so come in like manner as you saw Him go into heaven.”

12 Then they returned to Jerusalem from the mount called Olivet, which is near Jerusalem, a Sabbath day’s journey. 13 And when they had entered, they went up into the upper room where they were staying: Peter, James, John, and Andrew; Philip and Thomas; Bartholomew and Matthew; James the son of Alphaeus and Simon the Zealot; and Judas the son of James. 14 These all continued with one [b]accord in prayer [c]and supplication, with the women and Mary the mother of Jesus, and with His brothers.

Acts 1:6-14

Therefore, when they had come together, they asked Him, saying, “Lord, will You at this time restore the kingdom to Israel?”   7 And He said to them, “It is not for you to know times or seasons which the Father has put in His own authority.  But you shall receive power when the Holy Spirit has come upon you; and you shall be witnesses to Me in Jerusalem, and in all Judea and Samaria, and to the end of the earth.”

Acts 1:1-5

The former account I made, O Theophilus, of all that Jesus began both to do and teach, until the day in which He was taken up, after He through the Holy Spirit had given commandments to the apostles whom He had chosen, to whom He also presented Himself alive after His suffering by many infallible proofs, being seen by them during forty days and speaking of the things pertaining to the kingdom of God.     And being assembled together with them, He commanded them not to depart from Jerusalem, but to wait for the Promise of the Father, “which,” He said, “you have heard from Me; for John truly baptized with water, but you shall be baptized with the Holy Spirit not many days from now.

Therefore, when they had come together, they asked Him, saying, “Lord, will You at this time restore the kingdom to Israel?”

And He said to them, “It is not for you to know times or seasons which the Father has put in His own authority.  8 But you shall receive power when the Holy Spirit has come upon you; and you shall be witnesses to Me in Jerusalem, and in all Judea and Samaria, and to the end of the earth.”

14 These all continued with one accord in prayer and supplication, with the women and Mary the mother of Jesus, and with His brothers.
